Essential Oils for Wrinkles

Essential Oils for Wrinkles

Wrinkles are a natural part of getting older, and while it’s important to age gracefully, it’s not too outlandish to want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and make the skin appear a bit more vibrant. There are other factors besides the natural aging process that can contribute to wrinkles in the skin, those factors include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Stress

As you age, essential fatty acids and proteins (such as collagen and elastin) degrade, leading to loss of elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is a natural process. However, the other three factors mentioned above (sun exposure, smoking and stress) lead to oxidative stress by increasing free radicals in your body. An increase in these free radicals  causes collagen to break down, they damage skin cells and can lead to premature aging of the skin.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated extracts that are taken from the roots, seeds, blossoms, barks, peels, etc of various plants. The elements that cause the plant to have its particular fragrant smell are its "essence". When the essence of the plant is extracted, it is called essential oil. Essential oils can be used to promote physical healing as well as emotional healing (such as relieving or reducing anxiety).

Some essential oils have the ability to control the oxidative stress that leads to skin aging, meaning they can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These highly concentrated plant extracts are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and tend to have profound skin healing and renewing properties.

Massaging the skin with certain essential oils improves blood circulation, reduces free radical damage, enhances skin hydration, reduces wrinkle formation, and can fight inflammatory conditions and infections.

Here are the best essential oils to fight wrinkles:

10 Best Essential Oils for Wrinkles

  1. Lemon
    • Lemon oil has a high concentration of natural antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory compounds known as monoterpenoids (D-limonene, ꞵ-pinene and 𝑦-terpinene) which help to fight free radical skin damage, preventing premature skin aging. Lemon oil has been shown to increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, therefore, it's best to include lemon oil in your nightly skin routine.

  10. Rose
    • Rose essential oil has been used in skincare for centuries. It has excellent anti-aging, antibacterial and nourishing properties. The antioxidant abilities are due to a variety of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes which make up around 6.54% of the essential oil. These along with essential fatty acids help with cell regeneration and they work to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles giving you toned, youthful skin. Rose essential oil also contains depigmenting polyphenols (such as quercetin, ꞵ-pinene, kaempferol, gallic acid and ellagic acid) which reduce hyperpigmentation (dark spots), lighten old acne scars, age spots and stretch marks on your skin.
